Sports Betting in Massachusetts

sports betting

Currently, there are numerous states that have passed laws that allow people to participate in sports betting. This type of betting involves many different types of bets, including Moneyline bets, Teasers, Futures, Over/Under bets, etc.

Legalization in a number of states

Almost two-thirds of the states in the US have approved legal sports betting. The number continues to grow. But the state of Utah remains opposed to gambling. Its stance is written into its constitution. The state is blocked by courts.

The states can structure their legal betting industries in several different ways. Some states designate sports betting revenue for a specific purpose, such as education. Others deposit the revenue into the general fund. Some states limit betting to physical locations, while others allow betting through mobile apps.

Over/Under bets

Among the more popular types of sports betting is Over/Under betting. An Over/Under bet is a wager that a team will score more points than they lose. In football, the odds for Over/Under bets are usually expressed in fractions. Generally, the Over/Under line is the least flexible.

The over-under bet is a fun way to bet on your favorite team. The best way to approach it is to consider your budget and the game in question.

Futures bets

Whether you are a die hard sports fan or a casual fan, betting on futures bets can add a whole new level of excitement to your favorite sport. A good futures bet can add significant value to your sport watching experience and make you a healthy profit.

A futures bet is simply a bet that is based on the future outcome of several games during a season. These games are often championship games and can be lucrative.

Moneyline bets

Using money line bets in sports betting can be a great way to make a buck. However, you should be aware of the risks involved and manage your bankroll accordingly. Before you start betting, consider which sport you’re most familiar with and what you can afford to lose. You also want to be careful about picking the winning team. In some sports, draws are common.

Teasers

Despite the recent hype surrounding the Las Vegas Strip, the NFL remains one of the most underwhelming sporting events in recent memory. With the exception of the Super Bowl, the football season has a decidedly low-brow vibe. Having said that, some teams are more than capable of putting on a show, albeit one suited for the most discerning of tastes. Fortunately, there are a few ways to keep the sex out of the equation, or at least make the most of what is to be enjoyed.

Regulations for sports betting operations in the Commonwealth

During the Commonwealth’s recent legislative session, the Massachusetts House and Senate passed House Bill 5164, a bill which will legalize sports betting in the Commonwealth. The bill was introduced by Governor Charlie Baker, who has until April 2020 to sign it into law.

Under the bill, sports betting operators will be required to pay an excise tax of 15 percent on their adjusted gross sports wagering receipts. Similarly, operators of mobile applications will pay a privilege tax of 20 percent of their adjusted gross sports wagering receipts.
